Manganese is not found as a free element but is often found in combination with iron.
WARNING: The element is a required trace mineral for all known living organisms but is a neurotoxin. In larger amounts through inhalation, it can cause a poisoning in mammals with neurological damage that is sometimes not reversible.
The most important Manganese ore is pyrolusite (MnO2). 80% of the Manganese production is in Africa. Other economically important manganese ores usually show a close spatial relation to the iron ores. Steelmaking including its ironmaking component, represent almost 90% of the use of Manganese.
Stainless steel makes up much of the remainder.
Manganese has a melting temperature of 1244C (2271F).
