Is your house or yard infested with annoying flies? Do you want to learn an easy way to get rid of them? Here, I will outline how to build a very simple, but very effective fly trap. All you will need is a glass, some soapy water and a disposable lid.
The lid for this trap can be almost anything you have handy. A piece of paper or cardboard works great, but anything such as a flat piece of plastic or wood or even rock will work just as effectively.
To make the trap fill the glass or any container for that matter half full of soapy water. Cut a hole about 1/2 inch in diameter in your lid.
Next smear some attractant for the flies on the bottom of your lid. For this you can use molasses or anything that will attract flies. Rotting meat works but is more stinky that molasses. Many other substances can be used. Whatever you have that attracts flies should work.
Place the lid over the top of the glass or container with the smelly side down. The lid should completely cover the top of the container.
Before long the flies will be flocking to the glass trying to get at the bait. They will go through the opening and feast on the molasses or other bait. Once they have had their fill they will try to fly away and invariably they will fall into water and drown.
The soapy water is the key. Soapy water breaks the surface tension of the water. This soapy water will immediately enter the fly's lungs and drown them immediately. Without the soap the flies would not drown and would eventually, through repeated attempts, escape.
This simple, easy to make fly trap can quickly rid your house of flies and can reduce the numbers of flies outside as well. If you have any livestock such as goats or cows you know how bad the flies can be. Deploying a number of the easy to make fly traps in areas you want protected can make your time outdoors a lot more comfortable!
