Almonds were domesticated in the Middle East and India. So, while not native to North America they thrive in Zones 5-9.
The almond tree is a small tree with fragrant pink flowers in the spring. The almond trees grow a nut in a green husk. Almond trees are not self-fertile, so you will need two or more for pollination. The husk will split when the almonds are ready to eat.
Almond trees like full sun and well drained soil.
Once harvested almonds can be stored for extended use by canning. Cook the almonds in an oven at 250 F. Only heat long enough to lightly brown and thoroughly heat the almonds.
Place in preheated jars. After this the will last for months. If you can with canning jars they will last for over a year.
